9c1846885a Clean up JS 
* remove unused variables/functions
* use the dot notation
* use explicit coercion
* remove unneeded else
* use `textContent` instead of `innerHTML`
* cache a few `getElementById` calls
* fix a couple of undefined variables
* various assorted lint tweaks
